A Midsummer Night's Dream By William Shakespeare

Dallas Shakespeare Festival / Junior Players Guild, 1991

The Director started out the design team meeting by saying, "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..." to let us know that he wanted a timeless, cross-cultural feel to the environment. He also wanted primarily white costumes set against a deep green set. Working from that, I developed various silhouettes to distinguish the various groups in the play. The Duke's court would be in ancient roman togas with touches of silver, the lovers draped in romantic ruffles. The Fairy world was based on ancient Greek statuary with gold trim, while the rude mechanicals were in martial arts uniforms and more contemporary utilitarian garb, outlined in earth tones. Philostrate was Moroccan/Egyptian in shape and Hippolyta was dressed like Wonder Woman. Puck wore a white union suit with gold trim .
